Sweet and Salty

It’s a classic combination: sweet and salty. That’s why we love peanut butter and jelly so much (or in my case peanut butter and honey).

Pretzel maker Snyder’s of Hanover has a new line of Sweet and Salty Pretzel Pieces ($3.69 at Kroger) which feature pieces of the hard pretzels tossed in powdery coatings with flavors such as Cinnamon Sugar and Salted Caramel. They’re not a bad snack, but I have a couple of small complaints.

yellowFirst, they’re not salty enough. With both flavors, you get all the sweet without the hit of salt which would make them more irresistible. We could bicker about the artificial taste of the Salted Caramel, but  that’s almost always the case with this of-the-moment flavor.

Second, when the company says pieces, they mean it. Each bag has a few that are nice-size crunchy hunks, but most are little bits, smaller than some breakfast cereals. My husband found a way around this problem by eating them with a spoon — which, in the end, probably tells you all you need to know about this snack. They’re worth the minor shortfalls.
