My husband is a huge fan of tiramisu, yet it’s one dessert I don’t make often (to be honest, I can’t remember the last time I made it, so it’s probably been years). I was excited to see Bertolli released a new frozen version of the dessert, along with others such as something called a Cappuccino Strata Cake. (There’s a Lemoncello flavor, too, though I didn’t see it at the market today — and I’m philosophically opposed to the name.)
The desserts can be thawed in the freezer for 2 hours or popped in the microwave for 15 seconds. I tried the refrigerator-thaw method.
Both the tiramisu and strata cake had pleasant textures with clear definitions between the cake and filling. The tiramisu tasted of coffee and even of marsala. The strata cake was too sweet for me, with a slightly artificial aftertaste.
The tiramisu is no competition for the version at favorite restaurants, such as Figlio, but for a quick fix or surprise dessert in packed lunches, I’d buy it again.
